Chapter 17
Black dirt stretched as far as the eye could see. Rocks jutted out against the horizon in all directions, with only a few trees scattered in the distance, and a narrow road leading through to whatever was beyond the walls of rocks.
“Don’t suppose The City has a black desert for some freaky reason?” My mind immediately went to a ridiculous scenario, where we’d stumbled across the place where the spaceships transported humans to Earth, the spaceships turning the brown dirt black from the fuel.
What looked to be an army truck appeared in the distance, travelling toward us.
“I guess we’re about to find out where we are.” He squeezed my hand. “Are you ready?”
I nodded, not trusting my voice to come out as the confident person I was trying to be.
“I may not want to admit it, but you’re starting to become just a teeny bit fearsome.”
I smiled. “Only a teeny bit?”
His face softened. “I never wanted this for you.” He brushed his thumb over my lips. “I wanted to give you more time to slowly get used to the worst of what we are. Or maybe even hide that part from you, forever.”
“I know.”
“So you also know that things are going to get way out of hand in a minute, and I just want you to know that I don’t expect you to fight. Or be this fearsome woman who’s ready to kill or be killed.”
He traced the lines of my branding without taking his eyes off mine. “If at any point this gets too much for you, I want you to go inside me. I can finish this off on my own. Actually, I could probably finish it off that much quicker if I have you within me.”
I ran my hands up his stomach and rested them against his chest. “I’ll be fine. But, if I think you need me, I’ll jump on in.” I drew my brows together. “Or, I may not even have a choice. Last time on the beach I tried to materialise as I was drawn to you. But I couldn’t stop until I was smashing into you.”
I cast a quick glance to where the truck was. It was still a couple of minutes away. Farther in the distance, another truck was heading our way, too.
Jett looked toward the trucks then leaned down and kissed me. Cupping the nape of my neck in his hands, he deepened the kiss, locking yet another moment away to memory.
The sound of the trucks coming to a stop cut our time with each other short.
Jett gave me one more kiss and smiled as he took my hand in his, then turned toward the trucks.
Men dressed in cream, cotton pants and shirts, jumped out the back of the trucks, their guns resting in their holsters. They were human. “What are you doing here?” The man closest to us asked, his words laced with disgust and an accent I couldn’t quite place. “We’ve already given you what we agreed on. You’re not due for another shipment for five years.
